Growing up in California, I was brought up wearing sunscreen daily, which has since grown into a lifelong habit. With the 4th of July right around the corner, the risk of sun damage is all too real. Read on for some of my top built-in SPF foundations, and BB creams that I love for the summer months!
While the damaging effects of the sun are common knowledge, I still catch so many of my friends and colleagues (many of them in the beauty industry!) either not wearing SPF daily, or not reapplying it! Forget the sunspots, wrinkles and premature aging, I’ve heard SO many first-hand horror stories about women who have been diagnosed with skin cancer in their 20’s and 30’s. No, they didn’t live on a desert island. They got it on their left arm from driving to work everyday, or from a couple of bad sunburns they endured when they were little. Don’t even get me started on tanning beds…
So many of the dermatologists that I’ve spoken to, tell me that people in cities typically have more skin damage than people that live in tropical places. Why? City dwellers underestimate the sun. A cloudy day doesn’t mean you can’t get sun damage. The clouds actually reflect the sun, making you that much more susceptible to sun damage. This type of repeated exposure, creates the long-term damage. Meanwhile, people in warmer locations like Hawaii, already anticipate the sun, so they’re constantly reapplying sunscreen.
Ok, lecture over, I promise! Luckily for us, there are so many fantastic cosmetics on the market nowadays that have built-in SPF, allowing you to protect your face without any extra steps. One of my personal favorites, is the brand new Estee Lauder Double Wear Nude Water Fresh Makeup Broad Spectrum SPF 30. (my shade is “Tawny”) An SPF-infused take on Estee Lauder’s cult-classic Double Wear Foundation, the new Water Fresh formula offers light to medium coverage, which just MELTS into your skin, while acting as your invisible defense against environmental damage from UV rays and pollution.
Double Wear’s Water Fresh 24-hour coverage, and waterlight, semi-matte finish is perfect for the heat – when you don’t want your face literally melting off, yet you still want flawless, hydrated skin. The best part? The formula includes SPF 30, which is the minimum coverage you should be wearing everyday. (Consult your dermatologist for what you need for your individual skin type.) While I haven’t given it the full 24-hour test yet, I’ve been loving it’s staying power, after several full 9 hour days of running around in NYC.
In case you need to stock up, I’ve included some of my personal favorite built-in SPF foundations, and BB creams below that are ideal for the summer.
What’s your favorite SPF foundation or BB cream to wear in the heat? Be sure to tell me in the comments below, and keep up with my daily NYC adventures by following me on Instagram!
